Kinderdijk Walking Tour

Kinderdijk Tour

The windmills of Kinderdijk (UNESCO World Heritage) have kept the low land of the surrounding lands (Alblasserwaard) dry for a long time. This reclaimed land below sea level flooded frequently. Nearly a thousand years ‘struggle against water’ is visible in Kinderdijk, with its (polder) landscape and water courses, dikes, pumping stations, locks and windmills. An internationally well-known icon of Dutch water management.

Today water management has been taken over time by steam pumping stations and an electric pumping station. But the Kinderdijk windmills still work. Let’s take a stroll in this typical Dutch landscape. Visit a operational windmill and  let yourself be taken away by the historical film of Kinderdijk. Kinderdijk is only 20 minutes away from Rotterdam. You can visit the windmills by bus or by boat. The walking tour will start at Kinderdijk. A fantastic tour through this piece of traditional Dutch history should not be missed. Your guide wil tell you all about Kinderdijk and the surroundings.
